Jhakribas Water Supply Project - Nepal
Water is the most basic of human needs. Many villages in Nepal are without adequate, reliable and clean supplies of water, particularly during the dry seasons and with the increasing demands of agriculture, tourism, growing populations and today’s understanding of improved hygiene standards. This burden of water shortages falls mainly on women and girls. The provision of clean water has a positive impact on the village social system improving general health, education, maternal and child health, sanitation, hygiene, disease prevention, community and economic development, especially for women.
Project Managers
Russell and Debra Brown have travelled and led groups trekking in Nepal many times over the last fifty years. They have watched the nation and the people move slowly from a medieval agricultural society to a burgeoning international destination for adventure and cultural tourism.
In addition to trekking, Russell and Debra have raised money for:
- The rebuilding of the Pelmang Village school damaged by the 2015 earthquake
- Provision of the first set of computers for the student use at Pelmang.
- In association with Sydney Rotary, raised money for the successful completion of the Water Project for the village of Phortse, high in the Himalayas.
They have also physically assisted with the construction of a new school building near Lukla and financially supported a porter family to gain better employment qualifications through education.
Russell has been a teacher and manger in TAFENSW, an Official Visitor in NSW gaols and casual cave guide at Jenolan Caves. He and Debra live in Medlow Bath and support Medlow Bath Bushcare, Community Fire Unit and Residents Association as well as Blackheath Scouts.
Russell, a member of the Rotary Club of Sydney, has also been an active member of Rotary in Cootamundra and Lithgow.
