Tuesday 28 February 2012, David Koch - "How to Survive 2012"

David Koch has had a long career as a financial journalist including the production of his own publications and regular appearances on radio and television. He is currently the co presenter of Sunrise each weekday morning on Channel 7.

Police Officer of the Year Awards for 2011 The Rotary Club of Sydney was pleased to recognize the good work that is done by the City Central Local Area Command of the NSW Police at its meeting on October 6.  There were five finalists for the Club's Police Officer of the Year Award for 2011.   The winner was Detective Senior Constable Kristofer O'Brien.  Kris is a highly motivated and extremely dedicated officer who demonstrates excellence in the area of investigating fraud offences.  Fraud investigations are complex and protracted.   Over the past 12 months he has played a key role in six major fraud matters involving a combined total loss in excess of $80 million.   The other finalists were Constable Vanessa Cook, Constable Wade Imrie, Senior Constable Samantha Neader and Leading Senior Constable Dion Schreiber who were presented with certificates recognizing their achievements.   The awards were made in the presence of Superintendent Mark Walton, Commander of the City Central LAC who then addressed the Club.
Your Country

The New Generations Committee has undertaken our annual Your Country program. This involves at the expense of the Club taking 17 Year 8 students from Tempe High School to give them the experience of a week in the country at Coonabarabran in western NSW. With the support of Rotarians from Coonabarabran, teachers from Tempe High School and our member Rex Doughty (and his wife, Dee) the children at no expense to their families (including travel, accommodation and meals which are met by our Club from generous support from members and sponsors) undertook walks in the Warrumbungles, a night viewing of the Warrumbungles observatory, an experience with reptiles, visited the Western Plains Zoo, Siding Springs Observatory and more. For children with no experience of life outside the city this is a rich adventure.
Raising $250K for Wesley Mission

When young people living with disabilities reach Year 12 in New South Wales, their access to and the availability of appropriate programs and facilities is regrettably inadequate. President Ned Boyce has announced his 2011–12 President’s Project goal of raising $250,000 to help Wesley Mission retrofit an unused church on the grounds of the Ashfield RSL Club and establish a state-of-the-art centre and day program for young people with significant intellectual and physical support needs.

A cure for cancer?

Cancer cells are known to be ‘immortal’ since they can multiply without limit. Because normal human cells are not immortal, blocking cancer cell immortality might kill cancers without damaging normal tissues and, thus, be a cancer treatment with few side effects. With the help of Sydney Rotary and the $170,000 we raised, Professor Roger Reddel and his team at the Children’s Medical Research Institute are getting closer to answering this question.
